Welcome 🌻 to Friday’s Roundup of Good News!
“Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.” — Robert Collier. Note I know little about Robert Collier, an author of self-help books who died in 1950. I’m hoping he didn’t do anything particularly offensive, but no matter what, I like the quote.
These days, the MSM and many movies and series focus on big events, the clickbait, following the motto, if it leads, it bleeds. But the many small actions make huge differences. They add up. If you exercise one day, it may not matter. If you exercise 5 days a week for years, your body will be much better than if you hadn’t.
So, keep up the small deeds. The postcards, The little donations. The conversations, the encouragement. Help out in a down-ballot race.
And it’s not just politics, but so many other parts of our lives. For example, two things just happened that should help curtail gun violence — these things happened because of many small (and large) efforts.
Come on in, dear gnusies, and see what the good guys are doing!
Regular Scheduled Programming
No one here is naïve; we are aware of the many who are fighting to destroy our country. Some of us expected it: the cheating, the lying, the chaos, and yes, even the attempts to cling to power despite the clear will of the people. But we are here to read the efforts and the positive results of those (including us and our fellow gnus) who are working so hard to save our country from those very bad people. We are furious with them for what they are doing and we are letting them know. Remember:
💙 There are more of us than there are of them.
💛 They are terrified when we organize. THERE IS LOTS OF EVIDENCE THAT THEY ARE TERRIFIED!
💔 They want us to be demoralized. The best way to keep up your spirits is to fight. So, take the time to recharge your batteries, but find ways to contribute to the well-being of our country and our world.

👎 Kristi Noem (governor) is banished from about 10% of South Dakota Justin Rohrlich, The Daily Beast
South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, a MAGA Republican shortlisted as a potential running mate for Donald Trump in November, is now legally barred from visiting some 10 percent of the lands in her home state—and can be thrown out of those areas if she violates the order.
The Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Council voted on Tuesday to formally banish Noem from its reservation over recent public statements she made suggesting, among other things, that Native American tribal leaders are in league with Mexican drug cartels. Noem also recently accused Native American parents of not being involved enough in their children’s lives, blaming them for poor academic performance in tribal areas.
👎 👎 👎 Daily Docket (email, no link): In a win for voters in Arizona, Michigan and Nevada, three anti-voting lawsuits were dismissed.
-
A federal judge rejected a lawsuit from 11 Republican lawmakers in Michigan trying to invalidate two voter-approved voting rights amendments using the rejected independent state legislature theory. The amendments will remain in effect.
-
A federal judge — for the second time — rejected a right-wing challenge to a new Nevada law that makes it a felony to harass and intimidate election officials. The crucial law will remain in place.

👍 👎 Victor Shi: A tale of two campaigns. — Biden campaign: 300 paid staffers in 9 states; 100 offices; $5.4M on ads in AZ, GA, MI, NV and WI in March. — tRump campaign: <5 paid staffers in each battleground state; spending $ on legal fees, only $34K on ads in GA in March. Proud to be Team Biden.

Personal observation: I went to Texas to observe the eclipse. Although it was a long drive, that’s what we did, and because we were combining it with a visit to friends, we went all the way to Austin. Across most of Texas. I was curious as to whether or not we would see tRump signs; along the way, I only counted 3, and one was faded and certainly from the 2020 campaign, as it said “Keep America Great.” I know it’s only anecdotal, and maybe people aren’t yet paying attention to 2024, or maybe we were in blue areas only (I don’t think so). And, naturally, there were no Biden signs (although I saw a bumper sticker supporting Beto.) Anyway, I think the enthusiasm of the past is no longer there.
tRump camp dismayed as RFK Jr courts maga voters Alex Thompson, Hans Nichols Axios
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is making targeted appeals to Donald Trump supporters, pledging to "seal the border" from undocumented migrants and investigate the prosecutions of pro-Trump rioters who attacked the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
Why it matters: Kennedy's long-shot independent campaign so far appears to be hurting President Biden more than Trump in polls, but Kennedy's latest moves could flip that equation.
- Kennedy is now drawing fire from Trump and other conservatives who once hailed Kennedy's campaign.
The polls have been so unreliable that I never thought that RFK, Jr would take more from Biden than from tRump.
GOP Nevada’s minority outreach programs quietly shuttered Gabby Birenbaum, Peter Negebornen, The Nevada Independent and Raw Story
In 2020 and 2022, the Republican National Committee (RNC) and Nevada GOP made a well-publicized push to attract voters of color by opening several minority outreach centers in the Las Vegas Valley and across other swing states.
The groups touted the venues — which included a Black American Community Center and a Black Voices for Trump office in North Las Vegas and a Hispanic Voices for Trump outpost in East Las Vegas — as part of a “long game” of attracting the support of minority communities that historically leaned toward Democrats. The centers were often used to host political rallies, dances and other community events, with some even helping with preparation for the U.S. citizenship test. ✂️
But a Nevada Independent analysis found that those four locations are closed and now host other businesses. The Nevada GOP did not respond to multiple requests for comment about why the centers were closed or if they plan to re-open them.
Racism? Stealing money? Both? But Nevada was close and they elected an R governor.

Another example of “small efforts” — today more student debt is being cancelled
Today, President Biden announced that 277,000 more Americans will get their student debt canceled, bringing the total debt relief approved by the Biden-Harris Administration to $153 billion for 4.3 million Americans through various actions. This latest round of debt cancellation comes on the heels of President Biden announcing new plans that, if implemented, would cancel student debt for over 30 million Americans when combined with actions the Administration has taken over the last three years. This week’s announcements reinforce the President’s commitment to using every path available to deliver student debt relief to as many borrowers as possible through various actions.
The 277,000 Americans receiving this latest round of debt relief are borrowers enrolled in the SAVE Plan, other borrowers enrolled in Income-Driven Repayment plans, and borrowers receiving Public Service Loan Forgiveness. The Biden-Harris Administration fixed Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) and launched the SAVE Plan last year – the most affordable repayment plan ever. Already 8 million borrowers are enrolled in SAVE, 4.5 million of those borrowers have a monthly payment of $0, and over 1 million additional borrowers have a monthly payment of less than $100. And if borrowers took out low balances of loans, the SAVE Plan puts them on a faster path to debt relief after at least ten years of payments.
🌵 Kris Mayes, the Arizona AG, reacts to the AZ Supreme Court ruling to end abortion access in Arizona: ”Let me be completely clear: As long as I am attorney general of the State of Arizona, no woman or doctor will be prosecuted under this draconian law,” AG Kris Mayes told a crowd of people outside the Arizona Capitol.
She has the support of Katie Hobbs, the governor. Both women are democrats. Note that doctors may still be nervous, and I don’t blame them. Note, also, that Kris Mayes won her election by a mere 280 votes. Every vote matters.
💰 Downballot Ds are raising good money Troy Matthews Meidastouch Network
In what is already proving to be one of the most high stakes U.S. general elections in history, Democratic state-level candidates are hauling in massive grassroots fundraising numbers in the face of a Republican onslaught on democracy and reproductive freedom in state houses all over the country.
State Democratic candidates raised $6.9 million in Q1 of 2024 (January, February, and March) marking the strongest first quarter fundraising for state-level candidates in history thanks to early engagement by donors in high stakes down-ballot races.
💜 Unity? 💜
Success is the result of many small efforts. From the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the fact sheet in the White House Press release:
Today, the Biden-Harris Administration is announcing a new rule that will save lives by reducing the number of firearms sold without background checks. This final rule implements the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act’s expansion of firearm background checks—the only significant expansion of the background check requirement since then-Senator Biden helped shepherd the Brady Bill over the finish line in 1993. This action is part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s strategy to stem the flow of illegally acquired firearms into our communities and hold accountable those who supply the firearms used in crime.
Statement from the President: “I’ve spent hours with families who’ve lost loved ones to gun violence. They all have the same message: ‘Do something.’ Today, my Administration is taking action to make sure fewer guns are sold without background checks. This is going to keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers and felons. And my Administration is going to continue to do everything we possibly can to save lives. Congress needs to finish the job and pass universal background checks legislation now.”
Statement from the Vice President: “Every year, thousands of unlicensed gun dealers sell tens of thousands of guns without a background check, including to buyers who would have failed one – domestic abusers, violent felons, and even children. This single gap in our federal background check system has caused unimaginable pain and suffering. Today, as the head of the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, I am proud to say that all gun dealers must conduct background checks no matter where or how they sell.”
There’s more in the press release, but my GNRs already tend to be long. And more accountability with respect to guns down below (Schadenfreude).
We know that No Labels is not fielding candidates. But this did not just happen; people worked to make it so. Jennifer Rubin interviews Matt Bennett of the Third Way about it. Washington Post
Perhaps no single person played as great a role in discouraging a No Labels ticket than Matt Bennett, the co-founder and executive vice president for public affairs at the moderate Democratic think tank Third Way. I talked to Bennett over email about No Labels, and why it was so important to stop them. This conversation has been edited. ✂️
Then why was it a threat to Biden and therefore an aid to Trump and anti-democracy forces?
Trump can’t get above about 47 percent of the vote, so he can win only with the help of third parties, as he did in 2016. In 2020, when third parties were gone, he lost. This cycle, third parties help Trump the same way. He’s got a low ceiling but a solid floor — his voters don’t leave him.
Biden has a higher ceiling — plenty of folks who aren’t excited about him would choose him in a two-way race with Trump. But his floor is softer, and a small but meaningful group of voters who pollsters call the “double haters” might choose a third party if available.
What did Third Way do to get the word out?
Everything we did was in service to one goal: convincing credible candidates to decline the No Labels nomination if offered. We were the first to ring the alarm about this threat after they went public in September 2022. We assembled a broad coalition, from the far left to the center right. We issued dozens of analyses of their plans and claims. We convinced many of their allies to come out against their 2024 plan.
And as each potential candidate became public, we ran sustained campaigns of private persuasion from people in their personal and professional circles to convince them to decline. That started with Manchin and Larry Hogan, the first to emerge as No Labels prospects. But we continued this work with almost two dozen others as names emerged. And while we used mainstream and social media and even paid digital ads in this effort, we never directed it broadly at voters. Rather, our message was always aimed at the political classes and those around the candidates.
I know not all like Third Way, as some consider it too centrist. But they did us all a solid in helping to stop No Labels this time around.
Also, some former tRump voters don’t plan to vote for him in November:
Great! Now, I don’t know why she voted for him in 2016 and in 2020, because he was the same guy then, but hey, each time this happens, this is good.

🌱Grass roots. Biden and Harris can do the top-down stuff, but we have to support from the bottom. I don’t know how to deprogram 75 million people, but some things have been written about, such as deep canvassing, and lots of people are talking about this. If you know someone (who did not storm the Capitol), then see if you can be pleasant. Instead of trying to reason with them (logic is obviously not their strong point) distract them with something else. We need to remove the sources of lies and to take down the temperature. If we get more of the Rs to wear masks and to get vaccinated and to vote for Ds, the country will be a better place. We need to coax some of them out of the rabbit holes and diffuse the anger and the crazy.
🏃 Run for something. If you want to run for something, but have no idea what to do, these people will help you. They also like money and volunteers to help those people who are running, so even if you’re not in a position to stand for office, you can help. Note: they are especially planning to target the 57 Rs in local governments who participated in the insurrection.
👎 Defund the seditionists. Defund the seditionists. This is a list with companies that sometimes have donated to the seditionists. The list is long. You will recognize many of the corporations, and you probably have a relationship with some — either you are a customer, a shareholder, or maybe even an employee. Contact them and compliment or complain, but let them know you are watching. Forward it to others.

Crumbleys sentenced to prison for letting their son get his hands on a gun Tresa Baldas, Lily Altavena, Adrienne Roberts Detroit Free Press
James and Jennifer Crumbley, the first parents in America to be held criminally responsible for a school shooting by their child, were sentenced Tuesday in Oakland County Circuit Court to 10-15 years in prison each.
They were convicted by separate juries of four counts of involuntary manslaughter — one for each classmate their son murdered at Oxford High School on Nov. 30, 2021: Tate Myre, 16; Hana St. Juliana, 14; Madisyn Baldwin, 17; and Justin Shilling, 17. Each count carries a potential prison sentence of up to 15 years, though the sentences are expected to be served concurrently.
The prosecution sought the 10- to 15-year prison sentences for each parent. Both Crumbleys, who have been jailed since their arrest Dec. 4, 2021, asked to be sentenced to time served. Their son Ethan pleaded guilty to his crimes and is serving life in prison without parole.
Another “small effort” (we know it’s not that small) in combatting the epidemic of gun vioence.
Here’s a screenshot showing how much the stock DJT has plummeted in the last 5 days. Enjoy!
During the pandemic, we passed the CARES Act in 2020. I wanted it done, because people were suffering, but like many, I worried about tRump and his minions stealing from us. Well, prosecutions have been done (note this does not refer to tRump and his minions specifically), and here’s a press release from our DoJ.
Since its inception in May 2021, members of the COVID-19 Fraud Enforcement Task Force (CFETF) have used a full range of tools to hold accountable fraudsters and other criminals who sought to exploit the government’s pandemic response for their personal gain. This work has resulted in:
- More than 3,500 defendants charged with federal crimes.
- More than $1.4 billion in seizures and forfeiture orders to recover stolen CARES Act funds.
- More than 400 civil settlements and judgments.
To achieve these results, CFETF members have built a comprehensive program to identify fraud, recover assets, and hold wrongdoers accountable. This has included:
- Five prosecutorial COVID-19 Fraud Enforcement Strike Forces—based in California, Colorado, Maryland, New Jersey, and Florida—with dedicated funding to pursue pandemic fraud.
- A first-of-its-kind National Unemployment Insurance Fraud Task Force that leverages data from state workforce agencies and the Small Business Administration to identify those who exploited pandemic relief programs.
- A Pandemic Analytics Center of Excellence that creates sophisticated data products designed to detect, deter, and stop pandemic fraud across multiple government agencies.
But our work isn’t done. To continue CFETF’s essential mission—and to ensure that COVID-19 fraudsters don’t get away with it—legislation is required. This includes:
- Extending the statute of limitations for all COVID-19 fraud-related offenses.
- Extending the statutory authorization for the Pandemic Response Accountability Committee (PRAC), a body of 20 federal Inspectors General overseeing pandemic relief spending.
- Adequately resourcing COVID-19 anti-fraud efforts, including data sharing, lead development, criminal prosecutions, and asset recoveries.
To learn more, download CFETF’s 2024 Annual Report, available at justice.gov.
📣 Let’s Honor Truth ☀️️
This week I want to honor the authors of The Media and Me: A Guide to Critical Media Literacy for Young People. This book is designed to help youth learn how to use the media: how to question, how to evaluate, etc., but the tools could be used by anyone of any age.
It has 8 chapters, but the one we’ll look at here is number 7, about journalism. Pointers for evaluating news validity comprise of the following:
- Is the content journalism?
- Who is the publisher of this content?
- Who is the author of this content?
- Do I understand the content?
- What is the evidence?
- What is missing from the content?
- What is the bias?
I have been so frustrated by how easily lies take hold in the world. It’s important not just to show the truth, but to learn how to find the truth. It’s like that saying “If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.” What a great idea, to teach this to young people!
The book was done by Project Censored, and so has many authors. However, I met one of them, Andy Lee Roth, at the Tucson Festival of Books.

India’s Supreme Court decision protects humans from climate change Cristen Hemingway Jaynes, EcoWatch
In another landmark climate decision, the Supreme Court of India has ruled that an individual’s “right to life” includes protection against the impacts of climate change.
The verdict reflects fundamental rights stated in Article 21 of the country’s constitution, reported The Independent.
“Without a clean environment which is stable and unimpacted by the vagaries of climate change, the right to life is not fully realised,” the decision of the court said. “The right to health (which is a part of the right to life under Article 21) is impacted due to factors such as air pollution, shifts in vector-borne diseases, rising temperatures, droughts, shortages in food supplies due to crop failure, storms, and flooding.”

Due to climate inaction, Switzerland in trouble with European human rights court Cristen Hemingway Jaynes EcoWatch
In a historic ruling, the European Court of Human Rights has found that Switzerland’s inadequate efforts to tackle climate change violated the human rights of its country’s citizens, represented by more than 2,000 older Swiss women.
The landmark decision sets a powerful precedent for future climate-related lawsuits in Europe and around the world.
“It is clear that future generations are likely to bear an increasingly severe burden of the consequences of present failures and omissions to combat climate change,” said Siofra O’Leary, president of the court of human rights, as Reuters reported.
The court rejected a case brought by six Portuguese youth against 32 governments in Europe for current and future climate change impacts, as well as a suit brought by a former mayor against the town of Grande-Synthe, who said France had not done enough to prevent global heating.
